The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Wenchi in the Bono Region, Dr Prince Kwakye Afriyie, has said the main opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC), completed only 5 kilometres out of the 20 kilometres of road contracts awarded in their 8 year rule in the Wenchi Municipality.

Dr Kwakye Afriyie told Wenchi based Royals FM that the NDC government completed on average between 6.5% to 7% of the road contracts executed by Alhaji PM, the contractor.

His comments followed claims by NDC commentators in the area that the NDC government performed better in terms of road projects in the municipality.

Responding to the claims, the MCE said “the NDC did not do any good work with regards to roads in the Wenchi municipality during their eight years in government, because they completed less than 10% of road projects”, and added that “the NDC cannot throw dust into the eyes of the good people of Wenchi”.

According to the MCE, because of internal party wranglings the NDC government left the contractor to his fate and subsequently he had difficulties executing the project.

“The NDC government couldn’t help their contractors, during their time in office they actually left their own people executing various contracts to their fate and nothing was done”, he said.

With supporting documents, Dr Kwakye Afriyie explained that the NPP government, upon assumption of office, has repackaged the contract for Alhaji PMC and currently about 50% of the project has been completed.

He further pointed out that so far, only one contractor in the municipality, Alhaji Bintu, has completed about 30% to 50% of work on the St. Augustine road and still on site working.

“Nobody tampered with his contract, he is still on it”, he said.

According to Dr Kwakye Afriyie, although Alhaji Bintu is working, he has not been paid any amount of money.

He, however, assured that the assembly is working around the clock to pay the contractor. “The sad news is that the contractor has not been paid any amount of money yet”, he said.

The MCE further revealed that the Member of Parliament (MP) for Wenchi, Professor Gyan Baffour has written many letters to the appropriate quarters to get all problems associated with the contracts resolved.

“Our MP for Wenchi has been working tirelessly to get things going, so he has written letters to the appropriate quarters, including the Ministry of Finance, to get monies released”, he said.
