The Asutifi North District in the Ahafo Region has distributed 10, 000 coconut seedlings to farmers in the district, under the planting for food and jobs initiative by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
The District Chief Executive, Robert Dwomoh Mensah, on behalf of the assembly, presented the seedlings to 250 interested farmers in the district for free, at the premises of the assembly at Hwidiem, the district capital.
According to DCE, Dwomoh Mensah, the desire of his outfit to eradicate poverty in the area prompted the decision to provide coconut seedlings to the farmers to increase volume of produce and boost income generation.
He explained that the assembly is expected to provide 100,000 coconut seedlings to farmers, irrespective of their political affiliation, since the funds for getting the seedlings are from the assembly, which seeks the welfare of all constituents.
Dwomoh Mensah indicated that Agricultural Officers at the various zones in the district are in-charge of the registration processes to ensure that all farmers who are interested get some of the seedlings.
“It’s time you venture into coconut farming, which begins to bear fruits in three to four years to enjoy the best in farming” the DCE advised.
The farmers expressed appreciation to the government and the assembly for the efforts at improving their lot and pleaded with all farmers to venture into coconut farming because it is a booming an industry in the country and Africa and therefore lucrative.
