From Sebastian R. Freiku, Kumasi
Effective yesterday, the Ashanti Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service has embarked on “Operation Wear your seat belt”.
The exercise is to enforce the use of seat belts and curb fatalities from motor accidents, injuries and other road crashes within and outside the Kumasi Metropolis.
A statement issued in Kumasi by the ASP Godwin Ahianyo, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer, said the MTTD will vigorously enforce the exercise in accordance with Regulation 119 of the Road Traffic Regulations L. I. 2180/2012.
The statement said all commercial and private drivers are, therefore, entreated to wear their seat belts and carry along their driving licence as well for inspection.
Drivers who default in complying with the directives would be arrested and subsequently prosecuted, the statement warned.
