The Central Regional Director of Youth Employment Agency (YEA) Madam Sarah Afful says the regional branch of the agency has recruited over 8000 youth in the region since 2017 to date.

Madam Afful gave the breakdowns as 2000 youths recruited under the Community Protection Police (CPA’s), 400 as youth in sports and 310 recruited as youth in Arabic who teach Arabic in schools that require their services as well as 4000 people recruited under the sanitation module.

The regional Director of YEA disclosed this during an exclusive interview at Cape Coast in the Central Region on Monday.

According to her, the New Patriotic Party government (NPP) led by the President Nana Addo Dunkwa Akuffo Addo has the intention to reduce the unemployment situation among the youth in the country.

Speaking to the Chronicle, she denied assertions that some beneficiaries under the sanitation module have been unduly sacked.

“We have not sacked anybody as some are claiming, the agency had contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited which ended in February, a situation which compelled the agency to do auditing on the beneficiaries” she said,

Ms Afful, however, spelled out that several challenges were detected after the audit

Explaining further, she mentioned that the precious contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited lacked properly defined scope of work while recruitments were done without the involvement of YEA.

“There were no appointment letters for the recruited beneficiaries, no monitoring mechanism to check the work of the beneficiaries and the service provider and the Gh¢100.00 monthly allowance was unacceptable”. She added.

According to Ms Afful, YEA could not verify or ascertain whether the 45,000 beneficiaries list submitted by Zoomlion were indeed working or were just drawing allowances.

Following a newspaper advertisement dated 19th February, all beneficiaries who were eligible were asked to re-apply while the doors were opened to others to apply as well.

She emphasised that about 4000 beneficiaries made up of those who re-applied and new entrants have been recruited in central region alone and have started work while plans were advanced to recruit more.

The monthly allowance paid to those recruited under the sanitation module has been increased from Gh¢100.00 to Gh¢180.00.
