From Frederick Danso Abeam, Obuasi .
Authorities of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine have called for support from the media towards curbing stealing of the company’s properties by unscrupulous persons.
“Though statistics show that theft on the mine has gone down, the menace has not completely been eliminated and effort must be made to stop it once and for all”, Mr. Emmanuel Kofi Massey Stakeholder Engagement Officer of the company said.
Speaking during an interaction with the media at Obuasi over the weekend, Mr. Massey said of grave concern to AGA is the cutting of wire net around the mine and also periodic entry of thieves on the mine premises.
“Stealing from the mines if not checked could deter investors from coming on board and I appeal to the media, as partners in development to help nip the menace in the bud,” he said.
On employment, the Stakeholder Engagement Officer said the process is ongoing and added that statistics on employment will be made public at the next town hall meeting by the company.
In an answer to a question from the media, Mr. Massey said as many as ten contractors who have employed mainly the local people have come on board and are busily working in their various areas.
He mentioned Kilon Design and Build Limited in charge of rehabilitation of Sam Jonah
Estates, with a workforce of 246, as one of them.
Madam Patience Quaye, the Public Relations and Communications Officer said it is the view of management of the company that Obuasi should exist beyond gold and for that matter certain structures have been put in place to achieve that objective.
She mentioned skills development
and evergreen initiative as some of the structures.
