From Sara Amankwaa . The Wenchi Municipal Assembly in the Bono Region has raised GH¢163,000 for the construction of a standard sports stadium.
The initial amount would cater for the development of the pitch and inner perimeter which is expected to raise additional revenue for the assembly.
Addressing a Town Hall Meeting at Wenchi, the Municipal Chief Executive, Dr Kwakye Afriyie, the project, which would be funded by the assembly, would be executed by Green Grass Technology, a local sports infrastructure development firm, and is to commerce in April and completed within 12 months.
The Assembly would fund the project, made up of changing rooms, sanitary facilities, modern pitch, stands and other auxiliary facilities, through its share of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) and Internally Generated Fund (IGF).
According to Dr Afriyie, the assembly has held discussions with the Youth and Sports Ministry for partnership to ensure the project becomes one of the best in the country. The Town Hall Meeting was under the theme: “United Agenda for Rapid Transformation of Wenchi – Take of the youth.”
The meeting offered an opportunity for the assembly to engage with, inform, and appraise the people on developments in the municipality.
The residents also took advantage of the meeting to ask questions on measures to enhance local government, accountability and transparency.
Dr Afriyie said the sports stadium would serve as a platform to promote sports development in the municipality
“The stadium would be hired or rented as home grounds for interested football clubs, which would generate revenue for the assembly,” the MCE said, and appealed to well to do citizens of Wenchi to support the project.
