The 4th edition of the annual Regional Inter-District Junior High School Quiz Competition saw UMat Junior High School in the Tarkwa Nsuaem District emerging tops by snatching victory from the hands of the two-times defending champion, GREL Basic Junior High School in Ahanta West District.
GREL Basic School has, on two consecutive times, won the trophy by coming tops in the quiz competition for the years 2017 and 2018.
However, they could not produce the quality needed to defend their title when UMat Basic School produced an outstanding performance to deny them the title.
UMAT joined other eight schools for the preliminaries of the competition, only to end up coming tops.
UMat came top with a total of 46 points to beat the defending champions, who only managed sixth position.
BOPP Basic came second with a total of 40 points, whilst Christ Leading School came third with 38 points.
For their prize, UMat went home with an undisclosed cash sum, a certificate, laptop, medals and books for the school and the district.
The second and third schools also received a certificate, books and a medal.
Awuale Amihere Kpanyile III, Omanhene of Atuabo and Vice President of the Regional House of Chiefs, expressed the hope the competition would be sustained.
He said, considering the importance of quizzes, it was important it was sustained to serve as a reminder to the pupils who would be writing their exams.
Nana Osei Nkwantabisa, Development Chief of Lower Axim, who held the programme, lauded the pupils for the exceptional performance they put up during the quiz competition.
He said the committee had taken into good faith some of the worries and concerns expressed over some of the questions, adding that going into the future, the worries expressed would be taken care of.
The programme saw a high-powered delegation of chiefs, corporate institutions and academia. Each school saw teachers travelling from the eight districts in the region for the competition.
