The driver of a Kia truck with registration number GT 2519 W was killed on the spot Sunday morning, when the truck burst a tyre and crashed into a ditch in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
The deceased and his mate were transporting building materials towards Navrongo when the accident occurred at Yikene, a suburb of Bolgatanga.
Though the driver’s mate survived the accident, he sustained serious injuries and was taken to the regional hospital where the body of his master was also deposited in the morgue.
A resident of a Yikene, Gregory Abasang, witnessed the accident and narrated to this reporter that the truck burst a tyre, crashed into a tree and uprooted it before crashing into a ditch, killing the driver instantly.
The eyewitness said he and others called the Ghana National Fire Service before some officers were dispatched to the scene.
“The driver was trapped inside the car. It took us not less than two to three hours [to remove the body] from the car. The whole car is condemned,” he narrated.
He explained that close to where the truck landed was a heap of sand which impeded the fire service vehicle from gaining easy access.
According to him, he had to go and bring shovels which were then used to clear the sand to make way for the fire service vehicle to gain access to the accident truck.
Mr. Asabang said personnel of the service had it tough before they were able cut through the mangled truck before rescuing the mate and pulling out the body of his master, whose name could not be immediately made known.
“But to be honest with you, my brother, the Fire Service men were ready to work but the things to use are not there. Because what happened was that, to cut the body of the car to remove the victims was very difficult”.
