From Inusa Musah, Ashaiman
Barely a week after the Tema Regional Police Command grabbed 11 Nigerian robbers for making the area unsafe, it has further gunned down a 26-year-old notorious armed robber.
The deceased, Ibrahim Shaban, was among some persons who were released about a month ago in the Justice For All Programme for murder and robbery.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Joseph Benefo Darkwah, Tema Regional Police Command Public Relations Officer, explained that on November 6, the Ashaiman Police had intelligence that a notorious armed robber, who had been on the wanted list of the police for the recent robberies in Tema and Ashaiman, had planned another robbery.
The intelligence led the police to a tea-selling place called Ataya in an uncompleted building near the Atadeka lorry station, in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality, to arrest Shaban, who was identified by the police as a wanted criminal.
Like a wild cat sighting its prey, Ibrahim Shaban abruptly grabbed and bit the left hand of one of the police detectives, and pulled out a locally manufactured pistol, but the police shot him in the right shoulder.
Exhibits retrieved from the scene include one locally manufactured pistol and one live cartridge. The bitten policeman and suspect were sent to the Police Hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead.
DSP Darkwah said the remains of the deceased has been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for preservation and autopsy. The injured police person is receiving medical attention at the hospital, he explained.
