The youth of Adeiso in the Upper West Akyem District have closed down the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) Board office and water supply to the entire district to demand accountability from its management.
They alleged that the Board had failed to render accounts for almost eight years now.
Chief and opinion leaders in the community have tried everything in their power to demand accountability from the Board, but all proved futile, provoking the youth to lock up the office.
When the Eastern File contacted the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the area Mr. Eugene Sackey, he mentioned that he received information that some angry youth were on their way to ransack the offices of the Water Board, and so he contacted the police.
He disclosed that the Water Board was to hand over to a new board, however, a communiqué came asking them to hold on with the handing over, and rather would get a five-member interim board until the new guidelines for the selection are drafted.
He said the current board had their term exhausted four years ago, but the failed to hand over and the board chair boldly told me he will not hand over.
He told me to use whatever powers I had to dissolve their board. “When you invite them to account for their stewardship, they don’t come.”
