Rancher urges youth to embrace farming

Director of Poku-Saa Ranch and Farming Company Limited in the Nkoranza South Municipality, Mr. Atta-Poku Senior, has urged unemployed youth venture to into agriculture for a better future.

Mr. Poku, who is into crop and animal production, indicated that his priority is to create more employment through farming, a dream he is pursuing with all the seriousness it deserves.

The farm director said farming is an essential business that can create employment opportunities in the agriculture sector for many people.

He explained that apart from crop production, animal husbandry, involving the rearing of animals, such as pigs, cattle, fowls and non-traditional animals such as bee-keeping, snail farming as well grass-cutter rearing, are all very lucrative business ventures.

Agriculture, for decades, has been associated with the production of basic food crops.

Agriculture and farming were synonymous so long as farming was not commercialised.

But as the process of economic development accelerated, many more other occupations, allied to farming, came to be recognised as a part of agriculture.

At present, agriculture, besides farming, includes forestry, fruit cultivation, dairy, poultry, mushroom, bee keeping, arbitrary, etc. Today, the marketing, processing, distribution of agricultural products etc., are all accepted as a part of modern agriculture.

Importance of Agriculture

Agriculture plays a crucial role as the backbone of our economic system. Agriculture, not only provides food and raw material, but also employment opportunities to a very large proportion of the population.

The importance of agriculture includes, but not limited to, source of livelihoods, contribution to national income, supply of food and fodder, importance in international trade, and marketable surplus.

Other important aspects of agriculture are a source of raw material, contribution to foreign exchange resources, vast employment opportunities, as well as overall economic development.
