As part of efforts to improve sports education in the country, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Foundation is to build an artificial turf at Duayaw Nkwanta in the Brong-Ahafo Region.
The Duayaw Nkwanta turf is one of the six to be constructed by the Foundation for some schools across the country. Additionally, the Foundation may be doing six artificial turfs every year for the next four years.
The move forms part of the foundation’s core objectives towards providing sports infrastructure and contributing to the development of sports and physical education among the youth. Dr Kofi Kodua Sarpong, Executive Director of the GNPC Foundation, has given the assurance that the turfs would be comparable to Barcelona standards.
Dr Sarpong has already cut the sod for the construction of one of such artificial turfs at the Bekwai SDA Senior High School in the Bekwai Municipality.
At the said ceremony, Dr Sarpong said: “This is one of six of such projects to be done this year. Another one will be done at Asokwa in Kumasi, two will be done in the Western Region, Effia Kuma in Takoradi and Tarkwa, Duayaw Nkwanta in the Brong Ahafo Region, and Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
At Bekwai, the site plan for the project was handed over to the contractor, who has six months to complete it to serve the school, community and its environs.
Dr Sarpong stressed that the field is proven to provide the most grass-like playability, and thus, urged the authorities of the beneficiary schools to take good care of it. The pitch comes with a fence, four floodlights and a standby generator to provide light in the absence of supply from the national grid.
