Ghana will be hosting the first ever Africa Minigolf Championship slated for July 26 – 29, 2018 at the Sport City Arena in Ridge, Accra.
15 African countries are expected to participate in this event with the ultimate winners to have a sponsored trip to Las Vegas, USA, for the MSOP World Team Minigolf Finals in October 27th.
African countries that had expressed interest and registered for the competition and the winning prize of US$50,000 include Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo, Central Africa, Equatorial Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Ghana, Congo, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Sudan and Chad.
200 players have registered to play to earn the title of Africa’s best individual and mixed pairs mingolf player.
Unveiling the competition dubbed – ‘Coca-Cola Open Africa Championship 2018’ last Friday, in Accra, which also witnessed the award ceremony for winners of the just ended GMF Schools, with awards presented to some victorious pupils who engaged in the Minigolf competition.
The President of the Ghana Minigolf Federation (GMF), Mr. Talat Fattal, in his opening remarks said the prize for the 2018 Open Africa Minigolf Championships was 4 automatic slots to compete for the $50,000 purse at the MSOP World Team Minigolf Finals on October 27th in Las Vagas – USA.
He added that the Sport City Complex will facilitate 10 different sports games, which will be opened by the end of the year.
Mr Fattal mentioned the promising benefits that Minigolf will bring to the youth and the country as a whole.
Regarding the OAMC, Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah said it was about time Africans started engaging in more collaborations to encourage unity among our Nations.
The Minister, together with his Technical Advisor – Dr. Owusu Ansah, Mr. Mike Aggrey – President of Ghana Minigolf Association, Mr. Yaw Konadu – President of the Ghana Deaf Minigolf Association and Mr. Ibrahima Kaba – President of the Francophone Association Sports City cut the ribbon to officially tee-off the Open Africa Minigolf Championships in grand style.
Mr. Isaac Asiamah remarked that the Sports City is a remarkable initiative on the part of the private sector to invest in the development of the lesser known sports.
He stated that Ghana is currently facing a lot of challenges promoting and developing sports like Badminton, Volleyball, Basketball, Minigolf, Swimming, etc. and for an individual to dedicate resources to its growth and development is laudable.
