A section of youth from Aboadze, near Sekondi in Western Region, last week Friday, attacked workers of the Mekta power plant in the town, after accusing management of denying them menial jobs, though they are operating on their land. According to the youth, the few vacancies available are being given to those not from the town.
Available information indicates that the youth invaded the premises of the company holding cutlasses and other deadly weapons, and attacked the workers. The Shama District Command of the Ghana Police Service has confirmed the story, but said no arrest had been made.
Though The Chronicle gathered some of the workers were seriously injured, the police told this reporter they had not received any injury report, and that they were still investigating the case.
A machine operator and victim of the attack, who did not want to be named, said the youth, numbering about 50, attacked both the expatriates and Ghanaian workers of the company.
He said though calm had been restored, the workers are working in fear.
