A seventy-year old man at Kayoro in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region is nursing injuries after he was brutalised on Easter Friday.
The Paramount chief of Chiana, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, allegedly ordered some men at his palace to assault him (oldman) for breaking traditional norms.
The assembly man for Kayoro electoral area, Allou Edward Bagetewone, who narrated the ordeal of the victim, Kukorenia Kawurake, said but for the timely intervention of the chief of Kayoro, the youth of the area would have taken revenge over the unwarranted attack on the innocent old man. The revenge, he said, would have been bloody.
Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III on Easter Friday allegedly ordered some thugs at his palace to beat up 70-year-old Kukorenia Kawurake for not taking off his cap to signify respect.
Speaking to a Bolgatanga-based Radio station, A1 Radio, the assemblyman said the victim was moving from Kayoro, where he hails from, towards Chiana, all suburbs of the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region.
He said while approaching the chief’s palace, the chief spotted him and ordered some men at his palace to beat him up for not removing his cap as he approached the palace.
“The chief’s brothers went and physically carried the old man from his bicycle and sent him to the chief’s palace. They started beating him up, saying he had shown disrespect to the chief, because if you are walking past a chief you are supposed to remove your cap.”
According to the assemblyman, even the chief of Chiana, Pe Ayagitam III “got up to beat the old man”
The assemblyman said after the old man was rescued, he was rushed to a nearby health center for treatment. He was later taken to the War Memorial Hospital in Navrongo.
“He was admitted for a day at the War Memorial Hospital and discharged [on Sunday]. But as we speak, he is still complaining of pains in his neck.
“What the chief has done is an insult to our community, because this is not the only incident from him, as many of such incidents have happened. The youth mobilised and they were going there [Chiana Pio Palace’s] but it took the intervention of our chief to calm them down,” he said.
Mr. Bagetewone on behalf of the youth of Kayoro is, therefore, demanding justice for the old man, for the brutality meted out to him.
“We will follow this case to its logical conclusion so that everybody will be satisfied. If they are saying that even if you are walking on the highway and you see the chief you should remove your cap or hat, then they should let us know”, the assemblyman fumed.
The Navrongo District Police Commander, Superintendent Ebenezer Benson confirmed that the case was reported to his office on Friday and investigations have since commenced, as the victim claims he can identify his attackers from the Chiana Pio’s palace.
When this Reporter called the chief to comment on the matter, he cut the line, after I had introduced myself as a journalist with The Chronicle.
Several other calls to the chief were not picked.
