Filth Engulfs Asamankese

Residents of Asamankese, the capital of the West Akyem Municipality of the Eastern region, are sitting on a time bomb of a possible massive and widespread outbreak of cholera, if the city authorities fail to act.
Heaps of filth and choked gutters have engulfed the entire city, particularly the Zongo market area, with traders displaying their products, including consumables, without any regard to their environment.
| In an attempt to address the situation, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Lower West Akyem Constituency, Ms Gifty Klenam, recently presented a quantity of tools to the Assembly to be used for communal labour.
Speaking at the function, the MP said most communities lack basic tools like spades, wheel barrows and rakes for effective clean-up exercises. Ms. Klenam said the lack of tools had contributed to the lack of enthusiasm for communal labour, expressing regret that the spirit of self-help was almost dead, and needed to be revived. She hoped the tools would help in the revival.
The items were received by the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. George Mensah Akpalu, who thanked the MP and promised that the assembly would buy more of the vital tools to help clean the municipality. In his address, Mr. Akpalu said lack of interest in communal labour by the citizens has been a worrisome matter to the assembly. He said quite often, the call to communal labour has largely been ignored by the people and urged residents to see communal labour as an activity geared towards ensuring that the environment was kept tidy to stop the threat of diseases and sicknesses. Mr. Akpalu appealed to the chiefs to co-exist peacefully, since unity and cohesion of a society depended largely on them. |
