Enforce Sanitation Bye-Laws … Zoomlion Manager Tells District Assemblies

THE ACTING Upper East Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd., the biggest waste management company in Ghana, Mr. Issaka Abubakar has challenged District and Municipal assemblies in the country to enforce all sanitation bye-laws that will punish people who litter the environment indiscriminately.
Speaking at Walewale in the West Mamprusi District of the Northern Region, during a clean-up exercise, the manager was worried about the way and manner people violate sanitation bye-laws and go unpunished.
Mr. Issaka said one of the major challenges impeding the work of the company is the dumping of burning charcoal into refuse containers, resulting in the burning of those containers and thereby reducing their lifespan.
According to him, the company currently has problems with the number of communal sanitation containers, because as people set refuse on fire some of the containers are damaged beyond repairs, while those that could be repaired cost the company a lot of money to put them back into use.
He said the assemblies already have punitive measures for offenders of sanitation bye-laws and urged them to ensure that those bye-laws are fully implemented to deter offenders from setting the containers on fire.
Mr. Issaka observed that the appalling sanitation situation in most parts of the country was attitudinal and advised people to have positive attitude towards sanitation so as to keep the environment clean.
They should also partake in clean exercises as part of their civil duty to keep their surroundings and public places clean.
The exercise was organized by the recently launched Zoom Alliance, a subsidiary of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd., with the aim of riding Walewale of filth. Similar exercise took place in the Upper East Regional capital, Bolgatanga.
As part of their three months contract with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, every Saturday, Zoom Alliance organizes clean up exercise in the towns to clean them clean and the Acting Manager maintained that his outfit would continue to partner government and other stakeholders in bringing sanity to the environment.
The four-hour-clean-up exercise involving staff of the district sanitation task force desilted some chocked gutters and cleared heaps of waste materials with trucks. Residents of most communities under the Fongni and Kukuazugu electoral areas participated in the exercise.
Speaking to The Chronicle, East and West Mamprusi District Operations Supervisor of Zoom Alliance, Mr. Dasan Salifu Wumbei explained that the exercise was not only meant to eliminate filth in the district capital but also to inculcate in the people the habit of environmental cleanliness.
He observed that generally, sanitation situation in Walewale was encouraging, explaining that numerous educational campaigns on sanitation had been conducted in most communities in the area.
