Community water source engulfed by refuse

Two communities in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region have had their source of drinking water engulfed by filth, as the main borehole which supplies water to the two communities is now in the middle of a refuse dump site.
The two communities, Zanko and Siriyiri of the Guo Electoral area of the Wa West district, need immediate attention in order to save the lives of the people.
The Upper West File gathered that the problem was a result of a refuse dump site created by the Wa Municipal Assembly when it was removed from the center of Wa, the regional capital, but people started putting up residential accommodation encircling the borehole, which was originally built to cater for workmen who work on the refuse dump site. It now serves as the source of drinking water for the communities of Zanko and Siriyiri.
The Assembly Member for the area, Ishmael Gapia, said currently, Zoomlion Company was still using the dump site which has been given a facelift recently with earth moving equipment, but he said that was not enough, since the area needs two new separate boreholes for Zanko and Siriyiri, as that would be the only way to discourage residents of the two communities from using the borehole at the refuse dump site.
He appealed to the Wa West District Assembly, under whose jurisdiction the area falls, to expedite action on the situation in order to save the people of the two communities.
When contacted, the District Chief Executive of Wa West, Mr. Adamu Dassana, said the siting of the refuse dump site was not in the best interest of the people, and gexpressed the hope that very soon his outfit would fix boreholes for the two affected communities very soon.
He said the situation in the region was not as hopeless as elsewhere, such that people would resort to living near refuse dump sites, and that the Wa West District Assembly was taking some measures to remedy the situation as soon as practicable, following concerns raised about it at the last session of the Assembly.
According to him, he had been discussing the same issue with the District Health Director, and that plans were far advanced to meet with the Regional Health Directorate concerning the same issue.
The DCE also assured that the Wa West Assembly had engaged the Wa Municipal Assembly, the original caretakers of the place, till 2004, to fashion out a strategy to find a lasting solution to the situation.
