AWC donates to Senior Correctional Centre
By Bernice Bessey
As part of the Action Worship Centre (AWC) International (ACI) Women Fellowship week celebration, the Dansoman branch of Action Chapel has donated items worth GH¢200 to the Senior Correctional Centre, formerly Borstal Home, over the weekend in Accra.
According to the Women’s President, Mrs. Mary Owusu-Senyah, it was unfortunate that as young as the inmates were they had been caught up by the law and have to spend part of their life in the centre instead of at home with their family.
“It hurts as mothers to find other children in such a saddening situation,” she said.
She urged the inmates to make use of the centre, in order for them to become useful in the future.
Pastor Mrs. Faustina Amegashie, sharing the good news of the Holy Bible, encouraged the inmates to use the opportunity to learn and prepare for their future, but not as a place to pass the time.
She cited the story of Joseph in the Bible, who, as a young man, although did not commit any sin, was sentenced to prison, adding, “even though he was in the prison, he kept his dreams alive till he became a minister of a country he doesn’t belong to.”
The officer in charge of the centre, DDP Stephen Coffie, stressed that the change of name from Borstal to Correctional Centre is to provide more meaning to the life of the inmates, by reforming and also providing training and skills in both formal and informal education.
He added that it was part of the reform to help the inmates, after serving their sentence, to reintegrate into society and become useful citizens.
He pleaded with institutions, organisations and individuals to support the centre, especially in education.
DDP Stephen Coffie thanked the women’s group for the gesture, and pleaded with them to continue to support the centre.
The women’s group presented items such as gari, sugar, tins of milk and Milo, rice, beans, assorted clothes, toilet rolls, soft drinks, soap and many others.
The women interacted with the inmates and their supervisors.
