He said, “The cemetery is our final resting place and must be kept well, hence, as long as I remain the Mayor, I will spend my birthdays cleaning the cemeteries as my contribution to society.”
Zoomlion Ghana limited, the leading waste management company in the country, in collaboration with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, organised a four-day cleaning exercise at the Awudome Cemetery, which ended last Sunday.
Mr. Robert Coleman, Director of Zoomlion Domestic Waste, said the company deployed over 3,000 workers, logistics, trucks, and the fumigation unit to clear all the weeds, and fumigate the entire area.
Mr. Coleman observed the need for a comprehensive and sustainable programme for the transformation of all cemeteries in the capital.
To this end, he said, Zoomlion was developing a proposal for the consideration and approval of the AMA, so as to transform cemeteries into tourist sites.
The Mayor paid glowing tribute to Zoomlion for spearheading the initiative, and added that President John Evans Atta Mills was very happy that the appalling and deplorable scenes in the country’s cemeteries would soon be a thing of the past.
Zoomlion, in an earlier collaboration with the AMA, cleaned the Osu Cemetery, also in Accra.
