200 NDC members defect to NPP
From Ernest Best Anane, Konongo Ashanti Region
About 200 supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Asante Akyim South constituency in the Ashanti Region have defected to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for an alleged abysmal performance of the government.
Their defection was publicly declared at the launch of the NPP campaign in the constituency. According to Alhaji Muniru, a founding member of the NDC in the constituency, the defectors were embarrassed by the disgraceful treatment meted out to former President Rawlings, and that the current NDC administration had nothing to show for the three and half years the party had been in power.
They claimed the previous NPP administration provided Ofoase, Bankame, Odubi, Kumeso, Yawkwei, Bereku, Amentia, Muronaim and Banka with electricity through self help project 4, while the roads that lead to Bompata, Wenkyi, Krofa, Morso, Juaso-Asankare to Asuboa and Dampong were also tarred.
Alhaji Muniru also said their defection was a direct response to the NPP flagbearer’s promise of free Senior High School education, which was seen as an important intervention that must be supported.
The defectors further stated that the NDC, as a party, deliberately shelved the true state of the health of the late President Mills until he died in office as a result of the ill health.
According to them, as good citizens of the country, they had decided to join the party that could deliver the aspirations of the electorate, when given the mandate.
According to Mr. Victor Adu, aka Kweku, NPP constituency communication director, the defectors were from various communities, including Krofa, Dwenedwenenase, Pra River and Obogu.
Mr. Kwaku Boateng, the parliamentary candidate, welcomed defectors into the NPP family, and commended them for the bold step they had taken.
He promised them massive infrastructural development in all the communities in the constituency, when he gets the nod to represent them.
